Angela Lang/CNET AT&T is now making its Call Protect fraud caller blocking service a default for its new mobile customers. If you’re an existing customer, don’t worry: The company says it’ll make this feature the default for you, too, in the coming months.AT&T said Tuesday it was able to make this change thanks to a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission last month that lets US carriers “aggressively block” unwanted robocalls, allowing them to turn on blocking features by default instead of as an opt-in service. This work comes amid growing a uproar from the federal government and customers over spam calls. The FCC has said that frustration has made robocalls the No. 1 complaint it receives from consumers, amounting to hundreds of thousands of grievances filed every year. The number of unwanted robocalls skyrocketed 46% from 2017 to 2018, according to caller ID service Hiya. For any existing AT&T customers interested in using Call Protect now, you can download the service as an app or turn it on through your MyAT&T account. The company has already rolled out a suspected spam caller alert for existing customers, too, and says it plans to add more tools to fight robocalls in the coming months.last_img read more

Down and out Videocon JP Associates IVRCL may be dragged to NCLTs

first_imgThe Reserve Bank of India (RBI) seal is pictured on a gate outside the RBI headquarters in Mumbai, India, February 2, 2016.Reuters fileThe Reserve Bank of India has sent the second list of over 40 large corporate defaulters that include Videocon, JP Associates, IVRCL, JSPL and Visa Steel, among others, to be referred to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), reported CNBC-TV18 on Tuesday, quoting sources.Financial daily Economic Times had said on Monday that the central bank was likely to advise the lenders to haul these companies to the NCLT for bankruptcy proceedings.”One should not think that just the first set of companies that have been identified alone are the problem. There is problem certainly down the line also,” R Gandhi, Former Deputy Governor, RBI, told television channel ETNow.Financial website Moneycontrol.com said that some other loan defaulting companies — Uttam Galva, Castex, Jayswal Neco, Ruchi Soya, Nagarjuna Oil & Orchid Chemicals, East Coast Energy, SEL Manufacturing, Soma Enterprises, Asian Colour, Ispat Coated and Unity Infraprojects — are among the fresh list identified by the central bank to be referred to the NCLT under the newly enacted Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) 2016.CNBC -TV18 had reported that these companies would be sent to NCLT if the debt issue is not resolved by mid-December and the list is likely to be released in September.Economic Times noted that most of the companies on the list are from the infrastructure and power sectors. It said that when contacted for a reaction, JSPL told ETNow: “As a policy, we don’t respond to speculative queries.”In each case, the debt level varies between Rs 3,000 crore and Rs 50,000 crore. Queries ETNow sent to Uttam Galva and Videocon did not extract any response immediately, the Economic Times reported.R Gandhi told ET Now that these companies were definitely put on alert when RBI announced the first list of accounts, which should be taken to the IBC. At that time, the banks and these accounts should have resolved their cases. Since voluntarily resolution has not been forthcoming, it has to be taken for compulsorily through the legal process, Gandhi said. The total defaulter list may have 35-40 accounts and State Bank of India alone gets a list of 25-26 accounts, CNBC-TV18 sources added. In June, an internal advisory committee of the central bank had identified the first batch of 12 accounts of corporate borrowers for insolvency proceedings under the IBC 2016.Each of these companies owed over Rs 5,000 crore with a total involvement of around Rs 1,75,000 crore, accounting for up to 25 per cent of the current gross non-performing assets in the banking system.According to a Moneycontrol.com report other companies on the list include Visa Steel, Ruchi Soya, Unity Infra, SEL Manufacturing, Monnet Power, Orchid Chemicals, Shakti Bhog, Nagarjuna Oil, Jai Balaji Ind, Some Enterprise, Videocon Tele and Essar Projects among others. In June, the central bank had identified 12 large stressed accounts to be taken to the NCLT. The football girls of Palichora

first_imgFootball girls from Palichora busy in practice. A recent photo by Mainul IslamThe hurdles were many — poverty, hostility of the community elders and even stalkers. Despite that, they they did not give up and continued to practice.Nothing could stop them on the playground. They are now the national champions. They will remind you of the indomitable girls of Kalsindur, Mymensingh. These are the football girls of Palichora, Rangpur. These girls became champions in the recently held JFA U-14 National Women’s Football Championship.Palichora is a village in Rangpur. There are 27 woman footballers in the village. Palichora Government Primary School became the runners-up in Bangamata Begum Fazilatunnesa Primary School Gold Cup Football Tournament in 2011. This drew the girls of the village towards football. The girls would sneak into the playground as the seniors and moulvis of the area would say, “Why should girls play like boys wearing shorts?” The guardians were not very enthusiastic either.Among the 11 girls from Palichora, one is on the national. This is Sirat Jahan. Sirat’s mother, Lipy Begum, said, “I wanted to get my daughter married as she insisted on playing football. At that time, Harun Bhai (coach Harun Ar Rashid) said he would take her responsibility. I couldn’t say no. Now my daughter is playing on the national team.”Another mother, Rozifa Begum, did not want her daughter Ishrat Jahan to play. “My daughter played football with the boys. I admonished her and shifted her to another school, but Milan Bhai and Harun Bhai brought her back.”The Palichora village is about 15 km from Rangpur. There are two schools side by side at one corner of the village–Palichora Government Primary School, Palichora MN High School. As school bell rang, girls in jerseys started to emerge. Shameema Akhter, Jharna Khatun among others sat under the goal post with their footballs and school bags. They put on their boots and braided their hair before starting practice.Coach Milan Khan made prepartions in the meantime. The girls started practice as soon as the coach was ready. As the coach blew the whistle they started to play. The Palichara girls celebrated their championship in the JFA U-14 Women’s Football in Dhaka on 19 July. Rangpur beat Mymensingh that day. Though it was Rangpur, each of the footballers came from Palichora village of Soddyopushkorini union of Sadar upazila. Shamima Akhter was the latest to be invited to the national team. Palichora is now a village of woman footballers.Palichora Government Girls Primary School team with guests at Rangpur stadium after becoming champions in the Bangamata Begum Faziluttennesa Mujib Gold Cup. The File photo: Prothom AloThe Palichora girl achieved a lot over the last eight years. They became the Bangamata School Football champions in 2012 and 2014. In 2015, they won the BRAC Kishori Football Tournament and in the preceding year they won 47th national school-madrasa tournament. In 2015, they reached the KFC National Women’s Championship final and won the fair play trophy.Ishrat Jahan, who was once frowned upon by her mother for playing football, now is an asset to her family. Her mother Rozifa Begum was at a loss when her husband died of cancer last year leaving four daughters. That was the year when Bangladesh became champion of the SAFF U-18 women’s football. Ishrat, along with her teammates, were awarded Tk one million by prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Ishrat spent Tk 300,000 on her mother’s treatment and kept the rest in the bank. Ishrat’s sister Nusrat Jahan too now plays on the national team.Rozifa is proud of her daughters, “I feel so happy when they come home and help me with their own earnings! I have no son, but I have no regrets now. My daughters are my sons too.”A group of footballers in the national team are from Kalsindur Primary School, Mymensingh. Former teacher of the school, Mofiz Uddin, contributed to that achievement. Coach Milan Khan, 26, too has been coaching them for free. He is a ‘B’ licensed coach of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Earlier, Harun Ar Rashid coached them.Milan Khan struggles to buy footballs, jerseys, shin guards, shoes, and other equipment for the girls. Sometimes he even sends the girls to play in different matches to earn money. The money is used on their practice. He regrets that the Rangpur district football association does not support them financially. The players were not even accorded any reception after winning the JFA Cup, he said. The coach wants to set up an organisation by the name ‘Soddyopushkorini Unnayan Sangstha’ for the socio-economic development of women footballers. The gurdians of the footabllers would be members of the organisation. He wants to bear the financial cost of the girls’s sports through this organisation in future.“These girls have great potential. Many girls of the village have the capability to play on the national team. I dream that the 11 girls the of Palichora team will play in Bangladesh’s jersey someday.”Perhaps the Palichora girls, too, have the same dream.(Barishal staff correspondent Ariful Haque helped in writing this report.)*This piece has been rewritten in English by Nusrat Nowrin.last_img read more

BMW shows handsfree driving on Autobahn w video

first_img Volkswagen announces ‘Temporary Auto Pilot’ with advanced features The video message was that the car was capable of driving on its own in certain circumstances but the driver is the one responsible, and the driver must be able to take over the driving task at all times. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. “The car adheres to all traffic laws,” assured the moderator. With the CDC system, the car can brake, accelerate and pass other vehicles while analyzing the traffic conditions. This BMW system uses radar, cameras, laser scanners, and ultrasound distance sensors to get the information it needs.According to BMW the system can also steer the car to pass a slower vehicle. If the car senses there’s a slow mover in front of it, it will search for an open lane where it can safely merge, pass the slow car, and return to the original lane. “Our main challenge was to develop algorithms that can handle entirely new situations. In principle, the system works on all freeways that we have mapped out beforehand with [a] centimeter accuracy,” said Nico Kaempchen, project manager of Highly Automated Driving. at BMW Group Research and Technology. This is no out of the box prototype destined for car showrooms in 2013, however. The video, with its cautious comments about driverless driving and a needed driver, is nowhere near showoff mode as to how the driver can just leave the driving to the vehicle tomorrow. The Autobahn feat was to show a system that might be available ten to 15 years from now, or, as the BMW put it, a “technology study” for use in advancing existing technologies.Overall, the European vendor approach in self-driving cars is not an aggressive play for headlines but rather a promotion of “driver-assistance” technologies that will incrementally lead to more and more driving automation.Driverless technology, say industry observers, will first show its face as a luxury option for high end cars before settling into the mainstream marketplace.Auto makers are selling cars with adaptive cruise control which applies the brakes during highway driving if traffic slows. BMW, according to Technology Review, will work on that kind of capability in its upcoming i3 series of electric cars. The company will offer a “traffic-jam feature” that allows the car to speed up, slow down, and steer on its own at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour, as long as the driver leaves a hand on the wheel. BMW has been drawing press interest in its recent show of what will be possible in self-driving cars 10 to 15 years from now. BMW had announced in August its “ConnectedDrive Connect (CDC) system. This week, a video was released showing a BMW on CDC realtime. first_img © 2013 Phys.org Explore further (A) Laser light at 578 nm is pre-stabilized to an isolated, high-finesse optical cavity using Pound-Drever-Hall detection and employing electronic feedback to an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and laser piezoelectric-transducer. This stable laser light is then delivered to the Yb-1 and Yb-2 systems, where it is aligned along the optical lattice axis to probe the atomic clock transition. Resonance with the atomic transition is detected by observing atomic fluorescence collected onto a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The fluorescence signal is digitized and processed by a microcontroller unit (MCU), which computes a correction frequency, f1;2(t). This correction frequency is applied to the relevant AOM by way of a direct digital synthesizer (DDS), and locks the laser frequency onto resonance with the clock transition. They describe their new clock in a paper they’ve uploaded to the preprint server arXiv. In it they suggest that if their clock could somehow be used to gauge the age of the universe, it would be able to do so within just a single second. More information: An atomic clock with $10^{-18}$ instability, arXiv:1305.5869 [physics.atom-ph] arxiv.org/abs/1305.5869AbstractAtomic clocks have been transformational in science and technology, leading to innovations such as global positioning, advanced communications, and tests of fundamental constant variation. Next-generation optical atomic clocks can extend the capability of these timekeepers, where researchers have long aspired toward measurement precision at 1 part in $bm{10^{18}}$. This milestone will enable a second revolution of new timing applications such as relativistic geodesy, enhanced Earth- and space-based navigation and telescopy, and new tests on physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we describe the development and operation of two optical lattice clocks, both utilizing spin-polarized, ultracold atomic ytterbium. A measurement comparing these systems demonstrates an unprecedented atomic clock instability of $bm{1.6times 10^{-18}}$ after only $bm{7}$ hours of averaging.via Arxiv Blogcenter_img Journal information: arXiv As time has passed, clock-making has become more important—besides helping people get together at prearranged times, clocks now help run the GPS system, keep networks on track and are key to unlocking the fundamental laws of the universe. As technology has grown in sophistication, so too has the need for ever more accurate clocks. This has led to atomic clocks which use the electronic transition frequency in the ultraviolet, optical or microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum to keep very accurate time. In this new effort, the researchers built a new type of atomic clock that is more accurate than any that has come before. To build their clock the researchers employed a laser and mirrors to build a lattice trap capable of capturing atoms—its purpose was to hold atoms steady so that there wouldn’t be any frequency interference, a problem with other atomic clocks. The trap was then filled with ytterbium atoms which were then shot with a second laser to measure their electronic frequencies. The result was a clock that if allowed, would be off by less than a second if run for 31 billion years.Building a clock that is believed to be the most accurate in the world creates a problem though, how to accurately measure its accuracy? The answer is by building another clock exactly like the first of course and then comparing the two against one another. That’s what the researchers did, running both clocks for a short period to see if they came up with exactly the same time duration, which the researchers report, they did.One of the first uses for the new clock will be in measuring gravitational redshift, which is a means of measuring very precisely, the height of geographic areas. This can be done because time moves slower in areas of higher gravity. The researchers say their new clock is capable of measuring redshit to within 1 centimeter. Researchers get around bad gap problem with graphene by using negative differential

first_img Journal information: arXiv © 2013 Phys.org Graphene-based transistor seen as candidate for post-CMOS technology More information: Graphene-Based Non-Boolean Logic Circuits, arXiv:1308.2931 [cond-mat.mes-hall] arxiv.org/abs/1308.2931AbstractGraphene revealed a number of unique properties beneficial for electronics. However, graphene does not have an energy band-gap, which presents a serious hurdle for its applications in digital logic gates. The efforts to induce a band-gap in graphene via quantum confinement or surface functionalization have not resulted in a breakthrough. Here we show that the negative differential resistance experimentally observed in graphene field-effect transistors of “conventional” design allows for construction of viable non-Boolean computational architectures with the gap-less graphene. The negative differential resistance – observed under certain biasing schemes – is an intrinsic property of graphene resulting from its symmetric band structure. Our atomistic modeling shows that the negative differential resistance appears not only in the drift-diffusion regime but also in the ballistic regime at the nanometer-scale – although the physics changes. The obtained results present a conceptual change in graphene research and indicate an alternative route for graphene’s applications in information processing.via Arxiv blog As most everyone knows, using silicon as the basis for building transistors is reaching its logical conclusion—basic physics dictates that transistors based on it can only be made so small. Thus, efforts have been underway for several years to find a replacement material. One of the leading candidates, of course, is graphene—it has a variety of properties that would make it ideal, the best of which is the incredible speed in which electrons can move through it. Unfortunately, graphene is not a semiconducting material—it has no bad gap. That makes it useless as material for use in a transistor, which by its very nature must have a component that turns on and off. Graphene stays on all the time.Researchers have spent a lot of time, money and effort trying to force graphene to behave like a semiconductor, but most efforts have either failed completely, or resulted in a slowdown of the movement of electrons—defeating the whole point of using grahene in the first now. Now, however, it appears the team at UC has found a way to use graphene in a transistor, without forcing it to have a band gap.The researchers took advantage of a property of graphene known as negative differential resistance—this occurs when a charge is applied under certain conditions to a material and the overall voltage level of the circuit is reduced. Thus, instead of changing the way graphene behaves, the team found a way to use another of its properties. They used the drop in voltage as a logic gate, which of course is one of the basic components of a transistor. The team hasn’t built an actual transistor yet, but express optimism that it can be done. If they succeed, it could mean the creation of transistors that operate in the 400GHz range—orders of magnitude faster than today’s silicon based technology, though they wouldn’t appear in consumer products for at least ten years due to the need to completely change production processes. In a paper they’ve uploaded to the preprint server arXiv, the team describes how they took advantage of a property of graphene known as negative differential resistance to coax transistor-like properties out of graphene without causing it to behave as a semiconductor.
