Angela Lang/CNET AT&T is now making its Call Protect fraud caller blocking service a default for its new mobile customers. If you’re an existing customer, don’t worry: The company says it’ll make this feature the default for you, too, in the coming months.AT&T said Tuesday it was able to make this change thanks to a ruling by the Federal Communications Commission last month that lets US carriers “aggressively block” unwanted robocalls, allowing them to turn on blocking features by default instead of as an opt-in service. This work comes amid growing a uproar from the federal government and customers over spam calls. The FCC has said that frustration has made robocalls the No. 1 complaint it receives from consumers, amounting to hundreds of thousands of grievances filed every year. The number of unwanted robocalls skyrocketed 46% from 2017 to 2018, according to caller ID service Hiya. For any existing AT&T customers interested in using Call Protect now, you can download the service as an app or turn it on through your MyAT&T account. The company has already rolled out a suspected spam caller alert for existing customers, too, and says it plans to add more tools to fight robocalls in the coming months.

Spotify will begin walking back its controversial decision to ban certain artists from playlists based on their “hateful conduct” and will “eventually restore songs” by rapper XXXTentacion, according to a report on Bloomberg. While one source close to the situation tells Variety that “nothing has been decided” on the matter, several other sources confirm the report, adding that it came about at the insistence of Troy Carter, the company’s global head of creator services and chief liaison with artists and the music industry.Reps for Spotify and XXXTentacion’s distributor, Universal Music, declined Variety‘s request for comment.Spotify’s policy was announced earlier this month via a vague mission statement against “hate content and hateful conduct” and a simultaneous interview with company executive Jonathan Prince stating that R. Kelly — who has been accused multiple times but not convicted of sexual misconduct against young women, including a child-pornography charge that was dismissed in 2008 — would be the first artist to be banned from the streaming giant’s playlists and other promotional efforts. The announcement met with immediate backlash from the media, artists, legal experts and even, according to sources, several senior Spotify executives. Within hours XXXTentacion, accused but not convicted of assaulting his pregnant girlfriend and other serious allegations, had been added to the list, and Texas rapper Tay-K, accused of murder, was apparently added several days later. The policy was apparently enacted in response to a call from the Women of Color branch of the Time’s Up movement, which called upon Spotify, Apple Music, Kelly’s label RCA Records, Ticketmaster and a North Carolina venue where the singer performed earlier this month to “join us and insist on safety and dignity for women of all kinds.”While Spotify’s highly subjective policy was met with applause in certain quarters, far more objected to its vagueness, the impracticality of policing it, Spotify’s seeming hubris in making such determinations, and especially the fact that it has thus far targeted only black males who have been accused but not convicted of serious crimes. The report says that the service “will eventually restore songs” by XXXTentacion, and that the “company’s top executives are talking to the music industry and civil-rights activists about how and when to adjust its rules in a manner suitable to both sides.” A source told Bloomberg that there are no plans to promote Kelly’s music. The move — which sources say was spearheaded by Jonathan Prince, who was the company’s head of PR during its public dispute with Taylor Swift over royalties in 2014 — caused such an uproar within the company that Carter was said to be on the verge of quitting. While sources tell Bloomberg that Carter plans to stay on the basis of assurances from CEO Daniel Ek that the policy will be changed, another source tells Variety that the executive would be leaving the company at the end of the year. Just two months ago, Spotify staged an initial public offering that valued the company at $26 billion. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Not to kill your buzz, but it doesn’t look like recent recreational marijuana legalization in some U.S. states will have an immediate impact on drug policy in Latin America. On Jan. 2, the United States Embassy in San José posted a story to its blog warning that the legalization of marijuana in the states of Colorado and Washington on Jan. 1 did not signal a change in regional U.S. drug policy. The post emphasized that the interruption of the production and trafficking of illicit drugs in the region remained a “key” element to the U.S. strategy, along with building international alliances, including the United Nations. The piece continues by saying that the U.S. government does not believe criminal organizations will disappear with the legalization of currently illicit drugs. The U.S. and Costa Rica participate in joint anti-drug patrols in Tico waters. Financial assistance from the U.S. government has helped Costa Rica bolster its border control and more aggressively patrol the high seas, where many of the largest drug seizures take place, according to Costa Rica’s Public Security Ministry. The ministry seized 4.5 tons of marijuana in 2013, much of it originating in Jamaica.Leaders in Central America disagree about the merits of legalization as a tool to combat drug-related crime.Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla has said that while she supports dialogue on the issue, she does not support the full legalization of marijuana, a position maintained by her party’s presidential candidate, Johnny Araya of the National Liberation Party, according to a Channel 7 video chat interview last December.Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina famously came out in favor of legalization, citing that the current U.S.-led drug policy had failed to curb violence in Central America. Pérez Molina heralded Uruguay’s recent decision to become the first country in the world to fully legalize cannabis production, sale and consumption.Colorado voters approved a measure to legalize the growing, distribution and sale of marijuana in November 2012. The Centennial State had already approved marijuana for medical uses.Washington State’s marijuana measure, also passed in 2012, will take effect in coming months.New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday he will authorize the medical use of marijuana, making his the 21st U.S. state to do so and one of the biggest.Pot consumption in Costa Rica blazed 260 percent since 2006, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, but only 15.5 percent of Costa Ricans say they favor the legalization of marijuana. Half of Ticos say they see no benefit from it, according to a 2013 survey by the University of Costa Rica.AFP contributed to this report. Wananchi Group, the owner of East African pay TV operator Zuku TV, has appointed former ONO CEO Richard Alden as its new CEO, replacing current boss Richard Bell.Alden, who has worked as Chief Operating Officer at Wananchi since the start of the year, takes the top job as Bell moves into a new role as non-executive vice chairman of the board.Bell has led the company since its inception in 2006 and launch in 2008 and was praised by group chairman of the board of directors, Ali Mufuruki, for overseeing the growth of the business, particularly in the last two and a half years.“Richard has done more than we asked him to do and has done it in record time under some of the most challenging circumstances, considering much of the fundraising was done in the aftermath of the global financial crisis in 2008 when it was extremely difficult to attract investments especially into the TMT sector in Africa. Today we are happy to see that the company is sitting on a solid foundation and ready to move to the next level,” said Mufuruki.Bell said that he now planned to go back to leading EACP (East Africa Capital Partners) in raising its next round. Bell is a partner in EACP, a venture capital firm focused on tech, media and telecoms investments in the greater East African region.Bell was credited with increasing the capital base of Wananchi Group to nearly KSH25.5 billion. His other highlights as Wananchi boss include establishing the firm as a dominant VSAT wholesale provider to resellers across Africa through its iSat brand, growing its cable Triple Play Services in Kenya, launching DTH Pay TV services in three countries in East Africa and growing the number of linear Zuku Channels from six to nine.Speaking to DTVE in August, he said that he also planned for Wananchi Group to launch a fresh funding round for US$50 million (€38 million) to US$100 million before the end of the year.Alden brings 20 years of TMT sector experience to the role. From 1998 to 2009 he was CEO and founding director of Spanish cable operator ONO and has also previously worked as CFO of Groupe Videotron, Optel.

But then there are the smaller annoyances that manifest in the form of often misused words and phrases — but come up all the time.Your “for all intensive purposes” that’s actually “for all intents and purposes.” Your corporate speak such as “let’s circle back” or “best practices.” “Irregardless” in lieu of “regardless” is another example, although the fine folks at Dictionary.com do confirm that “irregardless” is a word, “irregardless” of how much you might hate it.But now, one establishment in New York City has decided to take back control on at least one repeatedly misused word. The researchers also found evidence the Vikings occupied this outpost for more than a century, way longer than previously believed. Located in northern Newfoundland, the site of L’Anse aux Meadows was founded by Vikings around A.D. 1000. Until now, archaeologists believed that the site was occupied for only a brief period. The new research, published today (July 15) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that the Vikings lived there possibly into the 12th or even the 13th century. They found a layer of “ecofacts” — environmental remains that may have been brought to the site by humans — that were radiocarbon dated to the 12th or 13th century. These ecofacts include remains of two beetles not native to Newfoundland — Simplocaria metallica, from Greenland, and Acidota quadrata, from the Arctic. The layer also held pollen from Juglans (walnuts) and from Humulus (cannabis), two species that don’t naturally grow at L’Anse aux Meadows; rather, the Vikings could have picked up all of these plant and animal species when they sailed south. [Photos: 10th-Century Viking Tomb Unearthed in Denmark] They also found the remains of dung from grazing caribou, as well as remains of wood and charcoal. The layer from the peat bog is similar to other “cultural layers from across the Norse North Atlantic,” the archaeological team wrote in the journal article. More evidence Additionally, the archaeologists performed Bayesian analysis — a type of statistical analysis — on radiocarbon dates from artifacts previously excavated at L’Anse aux Meadows. That analysis also suggested Viking occupation for up to 200 years. “This does not imply a continuous occupation,” the researchers wrote, noting that the Vikings could have abandoned and reoccupied L’Anse aux Meadows when it suited them. Did the Vikings use pot in Newfoundland? The finding of cannabis pollen raises the question of whether the Vikings used cannabis for making clothes or for medicinal-recreational purposes while they explored North America. Paul Ledger, the lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at Memorial University of Newfoundland urged caution on the interpretation of the findings, noting that pollen can easily be carried by the wind. Ledger urged caution on the interpretation of the findings, noting that pollen can easily be carried by the wind. It’s also possible that some of the other “ecofacts” were brought to the peat bog by indigenous peoples who lived in Newfoundland, and not by the Vikings. [Fierce Fighters: 7 Secrets of Viking Seamen] Ultimately, “the results presented here [in the journal article] pose more questions than answers,” the archaeological team wrote. Reaction from other Viking researchers Viking researchers not affiliated with the research team urged caution about the results. “I think it is too early to draw any conclusions,” said Birgitta Wallace, a senior archaeologist emerita with Parks Canada who has done extensive research on the Vikings in North America. Wallace told Live Science that she isn’t convinced that the Vikings left behind these ecofacts. “I think it is highly unlikely that the Norse [another word for Vikings] would have returned in the 12th and 13th centuries, as there are no structures on the site from that period that could be Norse,” Wallace said. “We do know that there were indigenous people, ancestors of the Beothuk, on the site at that time.” Patricia Sutherland, a visiting scientist at the Canadian Museum of Nature who has also done extensive research on the Vikings in North America, said that while the Vikings could have been in Newfoundland during the 12th or 13th centuries, it is too early to say for sure. “It seems premature to suggest such a scenario on the basis of the ‘ecofacts’ listed in the paper,” Sutherland said. It’s possible that some of the beetles and plant pollen found in the layer were brought to L’Anse aux Meadows by the Vikings around A.D. 1000, and they continued to flourish after the Vikings left, Sutherland said. The research team plans to continue their work at L’Anse aux Meadows in August, Ledger said. COMMENTS SHARE Kerala Published on December 26, 2018 state politics COMMENT Seeking to widen its political base ahead of the coming Lok Sabha polls, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) on Wednesday inducted four more parties into its fold. A crucial front meeting held here decided to include the Loktantrik Janata Dal led in the state by media baron and Rajya Sabha MP, M P Veerendra Kumar, the K Balakrishna Pillai-led Kerala Congress(B), the Indian National League (INL) and Democratic Kerala Congress (DKC) as new allies. The other LDF constituents are CPI(M), CPI, Janata Dal (S), NCP, Kerala Congress (Scaria Thomas) and Congress (Secular). Announcing the decision, LDF convener A Vijayaraghavan said though several parties have been cooperating with the LDF for some time, the final decision was taken about the four parties only. “As the Congress and the BJP are taking positions which would destroy Kerala’s social achievements and destabilise the state by dividing it on communal lines, the LDF is joining hands with similar minds who have taken a stand against this,” he told reporters here. Among the new allies, only the Kerala Congress (B), which has been cooperating with LDF since the last Assembly polls, has a legislator in the House- K B Ganesh Kumar. Though KC(B) was an ally in the opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front when it was in power last time, it had snapped ties with it in 2015 and has been supporting the LDF from outside. INL, formed by leaders who had parted ways with the Indian Union Muslim League years ago, has been supporting the left front for quite some time.As far as Veerendra Kumar was concerned, joining LDF was a homecoming. While heading the Janata Dal (Secular), Kumar had parted ways with the LDF over seat sharing before the 2009 Lok Sabaha polls. He later formed the Socialist Janata (Democratic) party, a UDF partner.Veerendra Kumar said he was happy to be back in the LDF, a system with which he and his party could go along ideologically.M V Shreyams Kumar, son of Veerendra Kumar, is the LJD’s state president. The LDF inducted more parties into its fold with an aim to win maximum seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, front sources said.
