Chandrayaan2 Watch a replay of India launching mission to moons south pole

first_img 35 Photos #ScienceGoalsAll three of ISRO’s robotic explorers have different lifespans and will be looking to achieve key science goals in their limited time exploring the moon. Chief among these goals is the ability to understand the composition of the moon, allowing for a deeper understanding of its origin and its evolution. There are 12 payloads on board, with five on both the orbiter and lander and two on the rover. The lander will only operate for a single lunar day (two weeks on Earth). NASA is also hitching a ride on the lunar lander with a laser retroreflector, a device that can help measure the distance between the Earth and Moon. The orbiter will operate for a year in a circular orbit around the poles and carries radar and spectrometers that will enable study of the moon’s surface and exosphere. Predominantly, these instruments should enable a greater understanding of the moon’s water ice deposits. A mapping camera will also provide a 3D map of the terrain. The Pragyan rover, powered by the sun and AI, will cross the lunar surface at the blistering pace of 1 centimeter per second carrying instruments that can assess the molecules present on the moon. Arun Sanker/AFP/Getty Images India’s exploration mission to the moon shot off to a successful start early Monday. The Chandrayaan-2 mission, aiming to put robots at the lunar south pole for the first time, suffered several delays leading up to lift-off, but finally went off without a hitch. It was originally scheduled for July 14 but the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) postponed the departure less than an hour before launch due to a “technical snag.” The landmark mission departed from India’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, north of Chennai, at 2:43 a.m. PT (5:43 a.m. ET), Monday July 22. Unlike the Apollo 11 mission, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this week, India’s mission doesn’t involve human astronauts. Rather, Chandrayaan-2 is carrying three lunar exploration robots that will be able to survey the moon from both the surface and the sky.The payload of Chandrayaan-2 consists of a lunar orbiter, a lunar lander and a lunar rover and will be launched atop the ISRO-developed GSLV Mk-III rocket. That rocket is about half as powerful as the SpaceX Falcon 9 and will put Chandrayaan-2 into what’s known as an “Earth parking orbit” before the module uses its own power to extend that orbit and eventually position itself for a lunar rendezvous. How to watch the Chandrayaan-2 launchDon’t worry if you didn’t manage to tune in to watch the historic launch live — replays are available. ISRO handled livestreaming duties across its social media pages, which means you can relive the event at the ISRO Twitter or check out the agency’s Facebook page. The agency’s YouTube channel also covered the event. Indian public broadcaster Doordarshan broadcast the launch live and you can watch that stream below (lift-off happens around 38 minutes in): Tags Why is this mission called Chandrayaan-2?This is the sequel to Chandrayaan-1, an ISRO mission that launched 11 years ago featuring only a lunar orbiter. That orbiter reached the moon on Nov. 8, 2008, and then fired an impacter that struck the south pole. The material ejected from below the surface allowed ISRO to detect lunar water ice — a valuable resource that could enable future exploration. Chandrayaan-2 will look to build on this monumental discovery from the ground. When will Chandrayaan-2 reach the moon?Provided Chandrayaan-2 launches on time, it’s expected to reach the moon on Sept. 6, 2019. If it can achieve the difficult feat of landing on the surface, India will become just the fourth nation to complete a soft landing in history, following the US, Russia and China, which has the Chang’e 4 rover operating on the far side of the moon. The lander and rover are headed for the lunar south pole, exploring a scientifically important region that has been shown to contain water ice. The lunar lander, known as Vikram, and a rover, known as Pragyan, will set up shop in the south, unlike any previous mission to the moon. The proposed landing spot is between two craters, Manzinus C and Simpelius N.A video of all the moon landing sites — and Chandrayaan-2’s proposed finishing spot — is below:center_img Apollo 11 moon landing: Neil Armstrong’s defining moment Published July 10Update, July 14: ISRO announce launch called offUpdate, July 18: ISRO announce new launch dateUpdate, July 22: ISRO livestreaming details for second attemptUpdate, July 22: Added details of successful lift-off Sci-Tech 2 Spacelast_img read more

IWAI urges state to spruce up road connecting Kolaghat jetty with NH41

first_imgKolkata: Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has urged the Bengal government to spruce up a 4 km long road leading to the highway from the Kolaghat jetty in East Midnapore, to facilitate the transport of cargo through it.”We have finalised the design of the loading structure at Kolaghat. The only problem is a 4 km road connecting the place with NH 41 that needs reconstruction. We are inclined to do this with the Bengal government, which is happy to re-construct the road. We have got permission to operate our jetty at Kolaghat. It might need some dredging. Once the road is constructed, we hope to start operation before December,” said IWAI chairman Pravir Pandey, speaking at the Inland Waterways Summit, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in association with IWAI. Tata has already approached IWAI for movement from Kolaghat. Pandey said that the government has identified 36 National Waterways to be developed in the immediate future. He felt that the country can benefit more, both socially and economically, by developing the inland waterways. He cited that inland cargo has increased from 3 million tonnes to 7 million tonnes between 2014 and 2018. Google Photos Share Your Library explained

first_imgGoogle Photos: Share Your Library explained by Martin Brinkmann on June 29, 2017 in Companies, Google – Last Update: January 04, 2018 – 1 commentGoogle Photos new Share Your Library feature is currently being rolled out to Google Photos on the Web and mobile devices.Share Your Library is a new feature of Google Photos that Google revealed earlier this year during the Google I/O conference. It is designed to give users of Google Photos an option to share part of their photo library with another person automatically. The example that Google gives is that of a couple that wants to share photos of their daughter with each other automatically. Instead of having to share photos manually each time they are captured, or using shared folders for that, it is now possible to automate the process even further. We use the Android version of Share Your Library to explain the functionality. The general functionality of the feature is identical on all supported platforms.Google Photos: Share Your LibrarySelect the menu icon and then Share your library in the Google Photos application on Android to get started. Please note that the feature is rolled out gradually to all users, and that it may not be yet available on your device.Google Photos displays a welcome screen when you open it. It explains what Share your library does, and provides you with a link to a support page that provides you with detailed instructions on setting it up.Give someone access to all of your photos, or just some of them, on an ongoing basis. You are asked to pick a contact that you want to share the library with. Please note that Share your library is limited to one person right now. This means that you cannot use the feature to automatically share part of or all of your library with multiple recipients, for instance both of your parents or multiple siblings. You may pick one of the available contacts, or add a Google Account email address manually instead.Options to customize the sharing are displayed on the next page. You may restrict sharing in the following ways:Restrict by date — This enables you to set a starting date for the sharing. If you don’t pick one, all photos are shared.Restrict by photos — This filter enables you to restrict the sharing to specific face groups, e.g. photos of your daughter or son. This is restricted to faces, which means that you cannot use it to restrict other kinds of photos.Google notes that restrict by photos is not perfect. This means that photos may be shared that don’t belong to the selected face group. A tap on send invitation informs the recipient. The partner may do the same, but this is optional. To accept an invitation directly in the photos application, select Menu > Invitation from “name”, and select accept. If you don’t want to interact with someone on Google Photos, you may block them. This is done by opening a sharing album, and tappingp on More > Sharing options. There you need to select More > Block person next to the person’s name to add the restriction.Once a person is blocked, you won’t be able to see each other’s photos, videos, or comments in Google Photos. If you are the owner of an album, and you block a contributor, any content added by them is removed. If you are a contributor and block an owner, all of your content is removed from the album.Note that you will block that person on other Google services, Google+ for instance, as well.Closing WordsShare your library is an optional feature of Google Photos. It may speed up the sharing of some or all photos captured with a device to one contact. While some may find this sufficient, may would probably like options to share with multiple contacts instead.Since the feature is completely optional, you can still share using built-in ways that were there before. Create a shared album for instance, or share individual photos instead. Now You: What is your take on the share your library feature of Google Photos?SummaryArticle NameGoogle Photos: Share Your Library explainedDescriptionGoogle Photos new Share Your Library feature is currently being rolled out to Google Photos on the Web and mobile devices.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more
